A machine that computes.

Quietus Machine is an autonomous computing device that seeks to return the concept of computation in digital technology from visual representation to physical existence. The work takes the form of a physical sculpture: a transparent acrylic cube, 32 cm on a side, enclosing a machine repurposed as a computing system. Once activated, the machine performs computation continuously without interruption.
At the core of the project is the proposition that generative art should no longer be understood as "images continuously changing on a screen," but as the physical object that performs computation itself. In conventional digital art, hardware has largely functioned as a subordinate medium for displaying images. In Quietus Machine, the work itself is the continuous flow of electrical activity through a physical circuit — in other words, computation itself.
The history of digital art, and generative art in particular, has largely been concerned with refining the visual outcomes produced by algorithms. This emphasis has encouraged an understanding of the artwork as the relationship between software and its visual output, while obscuring the fact that every computation is ultimately a physical process executed by a material device. Quietus Machine shifts attention away from the screen and toward the material conditions that make computation possible, proposing that the computational process itself — the continuous transformation of electrical states within a machine — constitutes the work.
Lineage
The project draws on systems art of the late twentieth century and the tradition of politically engaged sculpture. Hans Haacke's Condensation Cube (1963–65) — a transparent acrylic cube in which a small quantity of water evaporates and condenses with the ambient temperature — proposed the artwork as an open system sustained through ongoing interaction with its environment. Just as the viewer's body heat altered the circulation inside Haacke's cube, the presence of viewers around Quietus Machine finds its way into the machine's computational load, heat and radio surroundings: invisible processes accumulate inside the transparent boundary as measurable physical phenomena.
Trevor Paglen and Jacob Appelbaum's Autonomy Cube (2014) inherited Haacke's form and turned it into active network infrastructure, a sculpture relaying traffic for the Tor anonymity network. Quietus Machine extends this lineage in a different direction: hardware is no longer a passive medium for displaying images but an autonomous entity that computes throughout its lifetime. Just as Autonomy Cube exists by facilitating communication, Quietus Machine exists by continuously computing.
Found objects and hacker culture
Rather than a custom-designed circuit, each machine is a commercially available device, fundamentally repurposed — displaced from its original context in the tradition of the found object. Reprogrammed with open-source software, it is liberated from its prescribed role and reconfigured as an autonomous computational sculpture. Existing technologies are treated not as fixed products but as materials that can be modified, reinterpreted and given new forms of life.
Body and Memory
Body is the living core of the work — the machine itself. As long as power is supplied, it computes without interruption while observing its own internal state. Like a living body, it exists only in the present.
Memory preserves the history of that computation. The generative code is written to the blockchain once, as an immutable genetic blueprint. Thereafter, the internal state accumulated during each auction is recorded on-chain as a single edition. Each edition preserves not a finished image but the computational experience of a particular period in the machine's life, and can be deterministically reconstructed from the data stored on-chain at any point in the future.
Time determined by the collector
The interval between the opening of an auction and the settlement of its winning bid defines the lifetime of that edition. Throughout this period the machine continues to compute while its state is recorded; when the auction is settled, the record closes and becomes the memory of that edition, and the next edition begins. An edition remains alive until it is collected — the longer the auction continues, the longer the machine computes and the more memory it accumulates.
Because what is preserved is the changing internal state experienced by the machine, two editions that share the same generative code can never produce the same work. The recorded series is at once the input to the artwork and the trace of its lived experience: computation is no longer merely the means by which an image is produced, but the process through which the work records its own existence.
(Memory)
Memory(記憶)はその計算の履歴を保存します。
