Machine

Quietus Machine returns generative art from the screen to the object. Three machines, sealed in transparent acrylic cubes 32 cm on a side, compute without interruption for as long as they are powered.

Statement

The work is the computation itself.

In most digital art, hardware is a subordinate medium for displaying images. Quietus Machine shifts attention from the screen to the material conditions that make computation possible.

The work is not an image produced by an algorithm, but the continuous flow of electrical activity through a physical circuit — computation as a physical process, executed by a material device. Each machine watches its own internal state — processor load, temperature, memory, network activity and the radio around it — and that state becomes the material of the work.

System

The body and its memory.

Body is the living core of the work — the machine itself. As long as power is supplied, it computes without interruption while observing its own internal state. It exists only in the present.

Memory preserves the history of that computation. The generative code is inscribed once as an immutable genome; thereafter, the state accumulated during each auction is recorded on-chain as a single edition.

Memory(記憶)はその計算の履歴を保存します。

Computational lives

Each edition is alive from the moment its auction opens until the winning bid is settled. Throughout that period the machine keeps computing and its memory keeps growing: the longer an auction continues, the longer that edition lives. When it is settled, the record closes and the next edition opens — the computation never stops.

Even when two editions share the same generative code, they can never be the same work. Each embodies a different stretch of the machine's life.

Lineage

From open systems to autonomous machines.

The transparent cube answers late-twentieth-century systems art: an artwork proposed not as a fixed object but as a process sustained through its environment. Here, the presence of viewers finds its way into the machine's load, heat and radio surroundings.

Questions

Collecting a lifetime.

What exactly is being sold?

Each edition is a token on Art Blocks (Ethereum). Its artwork is regenerated from the work's generative code and the memory recorded by the machine during that edition's auction.

How do the auctions work?

Editions are sold one at a time by serial English auction on Art Blocks. When an auction is settled, the next edition opens. The schedule, reserve and bidding rules will be published on each work's page and in the auction terms.

What does the machine record?

Its own state: processor load, temperature, memory, network activity and the radio activity around it. Each artist chooses which of these their work responds to.

Does it record people?

No personal data is published. The machine estimates how many devices are nearby from Wi-Fi signals, but only counts leave the machine; device addresses are never stored on-chain or shown here. See privacy.

Can I see the machines?

Their live state is shown on this page and on each work's page. Exhibition venues and dates will be announced.

各エディションは Art Blocks(Ethereum)上のトークンです。

Art Blocks
