What the machines observe.
This page describes how the machines handle radio and connection data. It is an explanation of the system, not a legal policy; a formal privacy notice will be published separately.
Radio around the machine
Each machine listens to the Wi-Fi signals in the air around it. Phones and other devices regularly send "probe requests" while looking for networks, and these include a device address that modern phones randomize. The machine uses these signals only to estimate how many devices are nearby and how busy the air is.
Device addresses are held only in the machine's memory for about a minute to avoid counting the same device twice, and are written only to a short-lived log on the machine that is deleted within minutes. They are never published on this site, sent to the relay, or recorded on-chain. Names of nearby Wi-Fi networks are never published.
Visitors who join the machine's Wi-Fi
If you join a machine's Wi-Fi, it shows the artwork in a pop-up. While connected, the machine counts connected devices and how long they stay, as numbers only. Your device's address is not published or recorded on-chain.
What is published
Only aggregated numbers — such as the estimated number of phones nearby, the number of connected visitors, the rhythm of radio frames, temperatures and processor load — are published on this site and through the public API. The memory recorded on-chain for each edition consists of the machine's internal state chosen by each artist.
Auction notifications
If you leave your email address to hear when an auction opens, we use it only to send you those notifications (and one confirmation). Addresses are kept in NEORT's mailing list with our email provider, Mailchimp, marked with the works you choose so that only these notifications reach you, and are never published or recorded on-chain. Every email has a link to unsubscribe.
Bidding
Auctions take place on Ethereum through Art Blocks. Bids and wallet addresses are public on the blockchain by nature. This site does not collect any additional personal information from bidders.
